FAQ

What is the process for adding an MP5 model to CS 1.6?

Unpack the archive you downloaded and move the .mdl files into cstrike/models, overwriting the stock MP5 files. The new files have to be named exactly like the originals, such as v_mp5.mdl, p_mp5.mdl and w_mp5.mdl. Should the pack include sounds, place them in cstrike/sound/weapons under the original names; sprites belong in cstrike/sprites. Back up the original files before replacing anything, then relaunch the game.

Which folder holds MP5 model files in CS 1.6?

Weapon models go into cstrike/models: v_*.mdl is the first-person view model, p_*.mdl is what appears in the player's hands, and w_*.mdl is the weapon on the ground. If your installation uses a localized folder, files in cstrike_russian/models override those in cstrike/models, so look in both. Never place weapon .mdl files in cstrike/maps or cstrike/models/player - they will not load from there.

Once a new model is installed, how do I get the MP5 in CS 1.6?

No separate switch exists - the game reads the model from cstrike/models on its own. Purchase the MP5 from the buy menu under Sub-Machine Guns, or enter give weapon_mp5navy in the console during a local game with sv_cheats 1 turned on. If the files were replaced properly, the new model shows up the moment the weapon is drawn.

The MP5 still looks default in CS 1.6 after installing a model - why?

  • The file names differ from the originals. The game expects v_mp5.mdl, not mp5_v.mdl or any other renamed file.
  • The files ended up in a subfolder rather than directly in cstrike/models.
  • An old copy in cstrike_russian/models is taking priority over your new model.
  • The pack holds only sounds, sprites or textures and no actual .mdl replacement.

Correct the path and file names, then restart Counter-Strike 1.6.

How can I bring back the stock MP5 model in CS 1.6?

Remove the custom files from cstrike/models (and from cstrike_russian/models if present) and restore your backup copies of v_mp5.mdl, p_mp5.mdl and w_mp5.mdl. Without a backup, verify the game files through your game client so the original models are fetched again. Custom sounds and sprites can be cleared the same way from cstrike/sound/weapons and cstrike/sprites.

Are custom MP5 models usable on CS 1.6 servers online?

Weapon models are client-side, so on most servers they work as usual and the replacement is visible only to you. Still, a server may push its own files or turn on consistency checks (sv_consistency), in which case your model can be swapped for the server version or you can be kicked over a file mismatch. On servers running their own custom MP5 or downloading files on connect, your local model will not show.

CS 1.6 crashes or stutters after a new MP5 model is installed - what now?

  • Download the pack again: a damaged or partial .mdl file can crash the game.
  • Take the custom files out of cstrike/models to test whether the model is to blame.
  • Highly detailed HD models can cause stuttering on weak or old hardware - compare against the default MP5.

If the game works normally once the original files are back, the model itself is the issue.
