FAQ
What is the process for adding a Famas model to CS 1.6?
You swap files by hand:
- Save copies of the existing files in
cstrike/modelsfirst. - Move the new
v_famas.mdl,p_famas.mdlandw_famas.mdlintocstrike/models, replacing what was there. - When the model comes with its own sounds, drop the
.wavfiles intocstrike/sound/weapons. - Launch the game again.
On localized installs the folder might be named cstrike_russian rather than cstrike; files in that folder take precedence.
Which folder should Famas .mdl files go into for CS 1.6?
Weapon models go in cstrike/models (or cstrike_russian/models on localized versions). Keep the original file names: v_famas.mdl is the first-person view, p_famas.mdl is what appears in the player's hands, and w_famas.mdl is the one on the ground. Don't put them in a subfolder, and leave the names exactly as the defaults so the game can locate them.
How can I turn on or pick a Famas skin in CS 1.6?
No menu entry exists for choosing a weapon skin. After the replacement files are in cstrike/models, the game picks them up on its own every time you use the Famas. Simply buy a Famas during a match or grab one off the ground to view the new model.
My Famas model isn't appearing in CS 1.6 - what should I check?
Start with the simple things:
- The file names have to match the originals exactly:
v_famas.mdl,p_famas.mdl,w_famas.mdl. - The files need to sit right in
cstrike/models, not in some other folder. - When a
cstrike_russianfolder is present, its files take priority overcstrike; check that you swapped the correct copy. - Start the game again after copying.
How can I bring back the stock Famas model in CS 1.6?
Remove the custom v_famas.mdl, p_famas.mdl and w_famas.mdl from cstrike/models, then put the original files back from your backup. Another way is to run Steam's verify integrity of game files option, which downloads the default models again. The same goes for any custom sounds you placed in cstrike/sound/weapons.
Are custom Famas models usable on CS 1.6 online servers?
Model swaps on the client side show up only for you, and only when the server permits them. A lot of servers check for consistent files; if your custom Famas differs from the server's set, you might get kicked or the server could replace your model with its own. Other players won't hear custom sounds either, and the server may swap out or ignore files that don't match its copy.
Custom Famas sounds aren't playing in CS 1.6 - how do I fix that?
Verify the .wav files are in cstrike/sound/weapons (or cstrike_russian/sound/weapons) and that their names match exactly what the model expects. Make sure the files are proper WAV audio and not damaged. On a server, those same sound files also need to be present server-side, or else the server's versions get used or the sound stays silent.
