Move the model files into your game directory. The primary mod folder is cstrike; for localized editions it might be cstrike_russian, and files there take precedence.

Weapon models go into cstrike/models: v_p228.mdl for the first-person perspective, p_p228.mdl for the model held by the player, and w_p228.mdl for the model on the ground.

Place the .mdl files in cstrike/models. If your game uses the localized folder, use cstrike_russian/models instead, since files there take priority over the defaults.

Before swapping anything, back up the original v_p228.mdl, p_p228.mdl, and w_p228.mdl so you can bring them back later.

There is no dedicated menu for selecting a weapon model. The custom P228 model takes the place of the default one, so just equip the P228 in game and it will show up.

Ensure the file names match the originals exactly: v_p228.mdl, p_p228.mdl, and w_p228.mdl.

• Make sure the files are in cstrike/models or cstrike_russian/models.
• Check that the file names match the standard ones exactly, including case.
• Restart the game after copying the files.
• If the model still does not show, the archive might be incomplete or the model could be corrupted.

Remove the custom v_p228.mdl, p_p228.mdl, and w_p228.mdl from cstrike/models, then restore the backup copies you made before installing.

If you did not make a backup, you can obtain the original files from a fresh CS 1.6 installation or by verifying the game files.

Custom weapon models are client-side, so on most public servers you will see your own P228 model while other players see theirs.

However, some servers enforce file consistency and may swap your model with the server version or disconnect you if the files do not match. On a server you control, you can allow custom models freely.

Remove the custom v_p228.mdl, p_p228.mdl, and w_p228.mdl from cstrike/models and restore the original files.

Then check that the downloaded model is not corrupted and that you did not overwrite other files in the models folder. If the crash stops after removing the model, the model file itself is the cause.
